Durris Mast Results 2009

The Durris Mast Race held on Thursday 21st May was the first of the four Cosmic Summer Series Races. Unfortunately it was a wet evening and the ground was very wet and boggy most of the way round. Runners returned covered in mud with tales of swimming in bogs. Surprisingly most people seemed to enjoy the experience even those wearing road shoes!

A junior race was held for the first time this year with a course distance of 3.2km, height 412m covering some challenging terrain. Well done to Joseph Helmore (MU16) 1st junior home, setting a course record of 21:55.

Simon Peachey - new Cosmic recruit - led the field in fine style with a winning time of 39:57 followed by Rob Brooks (Cosmics) in 2nd place with a time of 42:15. Clare Whitehead (Cosmics) had another fantastic run to finish 1st lady and 3rd overall in a time of 43:00 setting a tough new ladies record. Alan Smith (Deeside Runners) was 1st M40 and Steve Helmore (Cosmics) was 1st M50. Carolyn McLeod was 2nd lady (1st F40) and Jenny Boyd (Cosmics) was 3rd lady. Anita Hamilton (Cosmics) was 1st F50.

Many thanks to Fountains Forestry and Arqiva for permission to stage the race and to Matt Brettle, Ian Searle and Diana Jermieson for marshalling.

SHR Championships

We are now already halfway through the championship with 3 races done.  Results are at http://www.shr.uk.com/NewsItems.aspx?NewsItemID=474.  After winning the first 2 races and getting 2nd (Scottish woman) after Angela Mudge in the third, Clare has a clear lead in the Ladies Championship;  Anita and Lois have also completed 3 races and are hanging in there at 6th and 9th respectively. Cosmics is also the leading female team!  The men are currently 7th but they didn't do the Screel race.  Anyone who has done at least one race can still complete the championship (it's 4 out of 6 to count) - the next race is the Arrochar Alps on June 27th.

Well done Jon Duncan!!

There was a dramatic finish to a magnificent British and SHR Championship race at Stuc a'Chroin. After over 2 hours of running and having dominated the race from the start, gold-medal winning orienteer Jon Duncan was almost caught by the fast finishing Tom Owens. Neither knew that the other was so close and it was only about 800m from the finish that Tom caught sight of Jon on the forest road ahead of him, but his last gasp attempt to catch up was in vain. Tom had the consolation of overhauling both Morgan Donnelly and then reigning British champion Rob Hope in an impressive return journey from Stuc summit. Jim Davies was 1st V40 and Steve Oldfield 1st V50.

It wasnt quite so close amongst the women, but it was still an absorbing race with a strong field. Predictably it was Angela Mudge who emerged the victor, followed by Pippa Jackson, Helen Fines and 1st Scot Clare Whitehead. Fiona Maxwell was 1st V40 in 6th.
